First we have THIS article which ran in the Stars and Stripes. It talks about how in the few days after the earthquake and during the voluntary evacuations (departures) rumours fueled most of the fears of the families and service members in Japan. To be fair, the Yokosuka base didn't do much to dissuade any rumours and things got out of control. People panicked....
Next here's THIS article from the same paper that discusses whether the voluntary departures are just vacations on the government dime. During the evacuations there was no requirement that the families returned to any place specific. They could take a free flight to ANYWHERE. The linked article details one family who used it to take a vacation to Hawaii and stay in the military run hotel (it's NICE) on the beach....the estimated time these people will be away from Japan is 30 days....so 30 days on the beach in Waikiki? Paid for? Jerks.
Finally, there's THIS website run by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that updates daily about the Fukushima Daichii Nuclear Power Plant situation. Some of it is technical jargon, but the first paragraph always offers a concise summary of the situation.
That's all for now. We're still in San Francisco (we decided to be lazy and stay an extra night) and we'll be heading back to San Jose shortly. We had to leave Wylee with John's family for the weekend and I miss him so much. I will update on WonderCon later, I have some fun photos to share :)
