One of the most common questions I get from friends and family back in the US is "How's the food?" This question is usually said with a gagging disdain while the speaker clearly think about raw fish on a bed of rice wrapped in seaweed.
I think there's some terrible misconception that the only type of food to be found in Japan is noodles, raw fish, and seaweed. Hello people, Japan is a first world country. While they have plenty of options for their local cuisine, there are also MANY huge chain restaurants here that serve the exact same things they serve in the US. There's Burger King, McD's, Outback, TGI Fridays, Mexican food, burger joints, Indian food and the list goes on and is just as diverse as the US. Tokyo has a gauntlet of huge chain restaurants and they're plenty here in Yokosuka.
Additionally, if you want to cook at home, there's beef, chicken, fish, and pork sold (surprise) exactly like it's sold in the US....just more expensive. They also have tons of fresh fruits and veggies just like in the US.
So next time someone says to me "I wouldn't like to go to Japan because....you know...the food....eeewww" I'll respond "Oh really. So you're not going to the Southern US either because you don't like southern food. Got it."
